“Keep your eye on the ball!” we’d shout from the bleachers as our son swung the bat trying to fix his eyes on that moving target, not only to hit the ball, but to make it to home base or any base for that matter! It’s much harder than it looks, a fact I learned the hard way!
When the kids were older and their skill level more perfected, we parents had the opportunity to play against them. I recall stepping up to bat, watching the pitcher, and fixing my eyes on that tiny ball, and then whoosh, it whizzed right past me before I could even swing! The pitcher threw again, but this time I was hit in the leg! The pain was indescribable. I was black and blue for several weeks. Needless to say, that was the last time I attempted to bat!
As Christians, we are told to fix our eyes on Jesus, for he is the Author, (that is the Leader, Founder, or Pioneer) of our faith, and the Perfecter, (that is the Completer or Finisher) of our faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2).
What does it mean to fix our eyes on Jesus? We are to look only to him for rescue; salvation is found in no other name (Acts 4:12). Jesus invites us to follow him by the way he lived. He then paid the penalty for our sins by his death on the cross, and rose from the dead to give us eternal life (Colossians 2:14; John 10:28).
So let us fix our eyes on Jesus. We might not always hit the target of following him faithfully. In fact, we will miss many, many times. Even so, Jesus promises to complete our faith and bring us safely home to his eternal kingdom! Praise the LORD!
Prayer
LORD God, thank you for keeping your eyes fixed on your children, help us to keep our eyes fixed on you and follow you faithfully each and everyday. Amen!
Teach
this to Children
You will need a T-Ball stand, baseball, and a bat. Children take turns
hitting the ball with the bat. Emphasize not being distracted or looking away
when they swing, but they must fix their eyes on the ball to hit it.
When everyone has had a turn or several turns at bat, read the Scriptures from today's devotional from a child-friendly Bible, emphasizing our need to trust in and follow Jesus and then discuss with them what it means to fix their eyes on Jesus.
