"Super Heroes of the Bible" is a special midweek program which examines
the lives of some famous and not-so-famous people who had willing hearts
to obey God. And by obeying him, they were used in miraculous and powerful
ways to help change the course of human history. It is the goal of this
series to build FAITH, COURAGE, and OBEDIENCE in the lives of children,

If you are interested in S.C.U.B.A. but do not want to purchase the
curriculum, I put together a lesson plan using Internet resources for a
VBS. The lesson plan deals with the entire week, and is along the same
concept as S.C.U.B.A. only it deals entirely with Jonah. Please feel free

God’s glory and love are revealed through the miracles he performed and
were fully realized when he came to earth in the form of a man to save
mankind. By studying the miracles of the Bible children will gain a better

5) It's cool in the furnace, skit?

About 30 years ago, the church I attened performed "It's cool in the
furnace," a musical about Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo. Does
anyone out there have a copy or know where I might find one? Thanks for
your help.

6) You've got to have F-A-I-T-H, song?

We're using a borrowed, unlabeled cassette of the music from an old
vacation bible school program, and I would love to find a CD of the
music.  The song we use is called FAITH, and goes in part. . . "You've got
to have F-A-I-T-H;  You've got to have faith."  It uses "YMCA" type arm
motions.The kids love it.  Does anyone know where it comes from? If you
can help, please reply to this newsletter.  Thanks!

9) Pirate VBS

There are a lot of crafts that you could do for a pirate themed VBS. I
just finished a non-Sunday School pirate unit not too long ago, and we
made quite a few inexpensive crafts that the kids absolutely loved. Here
are just a few of the many ideas. If you would like to receive the rest of

For a theme, you could use Ahoy! All you mates of Christ! or something
similar; Or Gods Love The Greatest Treasure of all (more of a buried
treasure sort of thing)

    Spyglass Telescope: you will need 1 paper towel roll, one toilet paper
roll, markers, rubber band, and cellophane or Saran Wrap. Optional:
Stickers. Directions: Color and decorate both the toilet paper roll and
paper towel roll using markers and stickers. Cut four "tabs" of equal size
into one end of the toilet paper roll, by making four, half inch slits
into the toilet paper roll. Bend the tabs up, and slide the entire toilet
paper roll into one end of the paper towel roll. On the end of the toilet
paper roll that is not inside of the paper towel roll, fasten a piece of
clear (or colored) cellophane or plastic wrap using a rubber band. Now the
toilet paper roll can slide in and out just like the end of a real
telescope. You can pre-print the Bible verse onto computer labels and have
the kids put the label on the side of the craft, or you can let  older
children write the Bible verse in permanent black marker on the side of
the craft. For younger children you could also print a verse onto a
regular sheet of paper, cut the verse out, and let them tape or glue it to
the side of their telescope. Here's one possible verse: Psalm 19: "Open my
eyes that I may see wonderful things"

    Eye patches: you will need black fun foam, a hole punch, and black
elastic. Directions: cut a half circle with a flat top out of black fun
foam, slightly large than a child's eye area. If you wear glasses, trace
around the frame, it's a perfect template! Hole punch the top two corners
of the fun foam along the flat edge, and tie a thin piece of black
elastic, or elastic bead cording (craft supplies stores) slightly smaller
than the child's head to make an eye patch.

    Vest craft: you will need a paper grocery bag, paints, paintbrushes,
and a permanent marker. Directions: Ahead of time, cut out vests from
paper grocery bags, this is really easy to do, but in case you have never
done it before, you can find the directions online at:

stripes, or whatever design they want to make their own pirate vests.

    Bandana craft: you will need a square of white fabric large enough to
wrap around a child's head and tie in the back and fabric markers or
fabric paints. Let the children decorate a sheet of white fabric to make
their own bandana, they can also tie-dye it, by rolling it up, putting
rubber bands around it, and while wearing gloves dipping the fabric into a
dye solution.

11) Using the word "dumb"

to whom it may concern,
in regards to using the word dumb, I have always used the word in regards
to those who cannot speak. My apologies to anyone that it might offend.
But it is not meant to be offensive. Of all the things going on in the
World today, and we are going to whine about using the word "DUMB"? If
someone is using it and you do not like it simply BE HONEST with them and
instruct them how you would like them to address it. But just remember the
Bible (at least the KJV)( Isaiah 35:6 for one) calls a person who cannot
speak dumb. Again my intent is not to offend anyone.

12) About Pirates

I would like to comment on the theme of "Pirates" for a children's musical
in church.
By its definition, the word itself has several negative connotations that
I do not find appropriate -  especially for church use.  "A pirate is one who robs
at sea or plunders the land from the sea; one who makes use of or
reproduces the patented or copyrighted work of another illicitly or
without permission." (American Heritage Dictionary)   In effect, a pirate
is a THIEF.  Using "Piracy" as a theme for a Christmas musical may send
off a totally different message. 

As a teacher of children's theatre (aside from sunday school) I have had
several experiences in musicals.  Children love to wear costumes, and the
more imaginative, the better.  Once, we had a Christmas musical entitled
"Angels and lambs, ladybugs and butterflies."  These creatures also
witnessed the angels' announcement of the manger birth, so they all went
to tell their friends about it.  When all have gathered, they march to the
manger to make a beautiful and colorful tableau, singing "All creatures of
our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia!"  
Children also love to mimic animals and birds. Maybe you can make use of
this idea.

13) Altoid (mints) can crafts?

Does anyone have any suggestions for any crafts our children could make
from the  Altoid (mints) cans.I have been saving them hoping to come up
with an idea for the childrens church.

14) Used Lava Island Materials?

I know this is early for some, but want to get a headstart!  My church
chose to do VBS a year behind.  For example, we did SCUBA this year!  BOY
OH BOY, it was a success!  Im looking for anyone who as finished their
LAVA LAVA and would like to either sell or donate their materials &
ideas.  Thanks!!!
