6) Expectations vs. Wants
This past weekend I attended a
discipleship and evangelism seminar. One of the points
stressed by the speaker is that as we grow in our faith, it is a natural outcome to tell
others what we have learned--it is expected of us by God. As I thought about
this, it occurred to me that I should be saying this to the children I teach.
Rather than saying, "Jesus wants you to do this or that action or
behavior," change it to, "Jesus expects you
(and I expect you) to do this or that action or behavior. For example:
This week Jesus expects you to be kind to someone in your school. Jesus
expects you to tell someone about him. Jesus expects you to be honest. etc.
Then follow up in the next class with how, or if, those expectations were
reached.
Maybe its semantics, want vs.
expect, but for me--and hopefully for the kids I teach--it has been a
mind-shift. I look forward with expectation for what God will do in the lives
of the children in my charge!
