Our Greatest Enemy

In our last session, Tending Sheep & Killing Giants, we focused on the last section of our Psalm 23 Good Shepherd lessons*. We learned how David, from the time he was a boy, had unshakeable faith in God, and how God used his skills and talents to accomplish his will. We learned that David’s trust in God inspired a unique bravery to go up against Goliath, one of the fiercest warriors in his day, and he was able to defeat him!

When David became King of Israel, he wrote the Twenty-third Psalm and recounted some of the ways that God had shown his care and provision towards him throughout his life, declaring at the end of the Psalm, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

David believed that God would continue following and pursuing him until the very end of his life, and when he died he would live with the LORD forever.

Children, not everyone can say this, because not everyone is shown this kind of favor from God or the promise to live eternally with him. People have a fiercer enemy than Goliath. And even if we could shoot a sling shot like David, we do not have the power to slay this enemy!

The greatest news is that the Good Shepherd, which David wrote about, can be our Good Shepherd too! His name is Jesus, the Name above all names! Jesus has conquered our greatest enemy! Do you know what I’m talking about? (Receive answers.)

You might think I’m speaking of Satan. And yes he does have great power to deceive people and lead them away from God, but our greatest enemy is sin and death! The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” Romans 6:23 (NIV).

Jesus defeated sin when he died on the cross. He took the punishment we deserve for disobeying God, and overcame death when he rose from the dead. Only those who put their trust in Jesus, believing he died for their sins and rose from the dead, will have the right to live in the house of the LORD forever. And here’s some more great news, when we ask Jesus to be our Savior and Forever Friend, and receive the gift of eternal life, we are given the Holy Spirit, our “staff,” to lead and guide us. We also have God’s Word, the Bible, which tells us of God’s love and how he wants us to live. It is also our “rod” of protection, to defend ourselves against Satan’s attacks.

Today, put your trust in Jesus and follow the Good Shepherd all the days of your life!
